Two Chinese nationals, a man and a woman, have been arrested on suspicion of defrauding a woman in her 60’s out of 100,000 yen by offering a fake investment opportunity via social media.
The suspects, a 23-year-old female university student and a 28-year-old male company employee, are accused of conspiring with others to deceive the victim, a woman living in Hiroshima City, by presenting a false investment proposal through SNS.
According to the police, the victim was scammed a total of 46.5 million yen in cash across 17 transactions from December 2023 to March 2024 by an individual claiming to be an investment advisor. The arrested pair are believed to have been involved in at least one of these transactions.
Both suspects deny the allegations. The police are investigating their roles and any other accomplices, as it is suspected they received a portion of the defrauded funds.
