Yap Kai Wei (32), a Malaysian National who was on the wanted list was arrested for fraudulently obtaining metals worth 50 million yen.
Yap is suspected of impersonating a police officer, deceiving a 69-year-old woman living in Hyogo into handing over 97 pieces of precious metals. The woman was told that it was necessary to confirm whether the metals she owned had been purchased with criminal proceeds. After putting the items into a box in front of her entrance, a woman pretending to be an investigator came and collected them.
The woman who collected the boxes was already arrested, and from smartphone communications, they learned that Yap was involved, and was placed on the wanted list as a result.
During questioning, Yap is cited as stating, “I have absolutely no idea. I don’t know what you are talking about.”
