Bat-Er Munhzorigu, 49, a Mongolian National, was arrested for repeatedly stealing at jewelry exhibition venues across Japan each time he visited the country. He was dubbed the “shoplifting master” by other Mongolians.

Bat-Er is suspected of stealing two necklaces worth about 1.45 million yen from an exhibition held at Tokyo Big Sight. He is also suspected of stealing 16 pendants worth about 5 million yen from an exhibition held in Yamanashi Prefecture.

The Mongolian admitted to the charges, stating, “I took the stolen pendants back to Mongolia and sold them.” Immigration records show he entered Japan 20 times since 2020, coinciding with jewelry exhibitions held across the country.
