A Chinese man has been arrested for impersonating a Chinese police officer and fraudulently obtaining around 5 million yen in cash by falsely claiming, “There is an arrest warrant out for you.”

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, Zhong Jiacheng, a Chinese National and university student, is suspected of conspiring with associates last month to scam a Chinese man living in Fuchu City, Tokyo. Posing as a Chinese police officer, they called the victim and falsely said, “There is an arrest warrant out for you. To shorten the court proceedings, you need to send money to the investigation agency,” and tricked him into handing over approximately 5 million yen in cash.

Zhong reportedly posed as a “special investigator” from the local police and made the victim sign and stamp fake documents, convincing him the situation was real.

During questioning, Zhong admitted to the allegations, saying, “I did it because I had no choice.” The Tokyo Metropolitan Police believe he was also involved in four other similar special fraud cases and are continuing their investigation.
