Nguyen Ngoc Quy, a 24-year-old Vietnamese National Fukaya City was arrested on suspicion of smuggling approximately 3.3 kilograms of cannabis—worth about 16.5 million yen at street value—on two occasions from Vietnam to his apartment in Fukaya City in December of last year.
According to the police, the cannabis was hidden inside bags of dried fruit and cereal.
In November of last year, Tokyo Customs alerted the police, who then conducted an investigation and identified Nguyen as the perpetrator.
The police have not disclosed whether the suspect has admitted to the charges, citing concerns about the ongoing investigation.
Nguyen has previously been arrested four times on suspicion of smuggling cannabis. The total amount of cannabis smuggled is believed to be around 8.3 kilograms, with an estimated street value of about 41.5 million yen.
