The Ōtsu Kita Police Station of the Shiga Prefectural Police arrested a 77-year-old man on suspicion of Injury by Driving a Motor Vehicle and the Road Traffic Act (hit-and-run).
The suspect is accused of driving a passenger car on at around 6:50 p.m. on March 31, when he collided with two 15-year-old male high school students from Uji City, who were riding bicycles in front of him. At the time, the two were still middle school students. The accident caused them to suffer serious injuries, including a fractured right leg. The suspect then fled the scene.
He denies the charges, stating, “I don’t remember hitting anything, and I don’t remember fleeing.”
According to the police, the two injured students were cycling home with two acquaintances, making a total of four people in their group.
